You can’t predict the future. You can’t control the past. You can’t erase the circumstances of birth, time, economics, and politics into which you were born. And contrary to popular wisdom, most modern science (and the lived experience of billions) suggests you can’t even circumscribe the effects these circumstances will impress upon you. By all means, try. Inbibe. Meditate and pray. Attend therapy, and follow your doctor’s orders. These are all good things, and the struggle should be celebrated in proportion to the work required to wage it. But after all these eventualities and the footprints they leave behind, please write it all down. Or film them. Scratch them on your skin. Paint them on a canvass, or a brick wall. Your art is the people’s history of your life, and it belongs to us as much as you. Don’t steal.https://csuepress.columbusstate.edu/arden/1020/thumbnail.jp

How do I begin to describe how this experience has been? Do I explain the frustrations, excitements...anxieties? The one thing I can point to as an excellent learning experience is putting dependable people by your side to help when you feel so. damn, inadequate. Take Toni, for instance—I asked her in a time of desperation for some help with InDesign. She was there and was dependable. Toni put in the hours, and we built this together. Or, take Zach, my main reader. He was ready to receive 15 emails at a time when I needed things read over quickly. The staff at Columbus State was always ready to help if I needed a key or an answer to a question. I suppose the most valuable thing about this journey has been growing in humility and out of the humility learning it’s okay to ask forhelp .If I hadn’t, I would have dropped this project a long time ago, and it would have never seen the light of day. So,many thanks to all of you who have stood by my side during this endeavor. Thank you to all who have submitted, because we definitely wouldn’t be anywhere without your dedication to your craft. Thank you to the CSU staff. And, thank you to all of our readers. May our words embody our hearts, attitudes, and love for the world around us. And may they live in the hands and in the minds of our readers for many years.https://csuepress.columbusstate.edu/arden/1021/thumbnail.jp

What follows is a collection of abstracts summarizing the scholarship conducted by undergraduates at Columbus State University during the 2015-2016 academic year. These projects highlight undergraduate research conducted in a wide variety of disciplines, ranging from literary analysis to laboratory based sciences. The abstracts represent many ongoing projects on our campus and catalog those that have been published or presented. This volume begins with projects that have been selected for presentations at national, regional, and statewide disciplinary conferences. Among them are several that have garnered awards for outstanding undergraduate scholarship. Projects that have received competitive research grants, including our campus Student Research and Creative Endeavors (S-RACE) Grants, are also featured. Many undergraduates have presented their work with our local community, either through the dissemination of best practices in nursing to regional hospitals, colloquium presentations of lecture-recitals at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, or at Columbus State University\u27s Tower Day held in April 2016. Together these abstracts demonstrate the commitment of our faculty to engage students in their disciplines and represent outstanding mentorship that occurs on and off our campus throughout the year. Our students have amassed an impressive collection of projects that contributes to both academia and our local community, and these abstracts will hopefully inspire others to delve into scientific and creative inquiry.https://csuepress.columbusstate.edu/abstracts/1010/thumbnail.jp
